Students' Scientific Society meeting on democracy and human rights in Post-Soviet countries

ON THE 2ND SESSION OF THE STUDENTS’ SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY IN ENGLISH:

«DEMOCRACY & HUMAN RIGHTS IN COUNTRIES OF THE CIS»

Last Friday, December 12, 2014, students of St. Petersburg universities discussed in English some of the most fundamental and truly essential issues of nowadays. They met at the School of International Relations for a substantive exchange of views concerning democracy and human rights in Post-Soviet countries.

The discussion took place within the last session of our Students' Scientific Society in this semester, which was devoted to Human Rights Day celebrated annually across the world on 10 December. This session has been attended by the students of Political Science, International Relations and Law from St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Higher School of Economics.

Here we would like to take note of the highly informative statements by the fourth-year students Alexey Duzenko, Aleksandra Plotnikova and Ian Shevchenko. They clearly indentified to their colleagues both the priority areas and the pressing problems related to the process of democratization in Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, respectively.

At the same time we should point out that the guests of the session attached great importance to the statement on Ukraine by Alexandra Plotnikova, which wasn't surprising, as we see it, due to its relevance to contemporary international events.

As regards our view of the session, it obviously has served a useful goal of providing a better understanding of Post-Soviet countries, their politics and culture.
