Lecture "What is Israel?"

On Septemper 21, 2016 we invite you to assist the lecture of Professor of University of Monreal Yakov M. Rabkin "What is Israel?" from 11:10 AM till12:40 PM.

Yakov M. Rabkin, born and educated in the Soviet Union, is Professor of History at the Université de Montréal, where he has taught since 1973; he has also been associated with CERIUM, Centre for Research on International Relations. His areas of interest include Russian/Soviet history, science and technology studies and contemporary Jewish history.

He is the author of Science between the Superpowers, a study of Soviet-American relations in science and technology (1988), co-editor of Interaction between Scientific and Jewish Cultures (1995), and editor of Diffusion of New Technologies in the Post-Communist World (1997). His book A Threat from Within: a Century of Jewish Opposition to Zionism (Palgrave Macmillan/Zed Books) is now available in fifteen languages; it was nominated for the Governor General’s Award in Canada, featured at the Rendez-vous de l’histoire in Blois, France, and included in the list of three best books of the year by Japan’s daily Asahi Shimbun. His most recent book is Comprendre l’État d’Israël , also published in English, Japanese and Russian. The English edition is titled What is Modern Israel? (Pluto/University of Chicago Press, 2016).

Professor Rabkin published over three hundred articles and book chapters, including a history of Russian science, which appeared in Europe des sciences (Seuil, 2001) an analysis of science under totalitarianism in Science and Ideology (Routledge, 2003) and a paper on Christian and Judaic Roots of Zionism in Ukrainian Orientalistics in 2011. He has done work on science and technology in economies in transition, on technology transfer with E & C Europe as well as on cultural and religious aspects science and technology in non-Western societies. He has received research awards and fellowships from several countries and international organizations.

Dr Rabkin served as an expert witness for the Standing Committee on External Affairs and International Trade of the Parliament of Canada. He represented Canada at the OECD on issues related to international assistance to science in former socialist countries.   

Fluent in five languages (English, French, Hebrew, Russian and Spanish) Yakov Rabkin has been invited to comment on international affairs in both print (including Asahi Shimbun, The Australian, Baltimore Sun, Globe and Mail, La Presse, Le Devoir, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, International Herald Tribune, Haaretz, Jerusalem Post, Mezhdunarodnaya Evreyskaya Gazeta, National Post, Nunzio, Yediot Aharonot) and electronic media (including Radio-Canada, CBC, PBS, Télé-Québec, CTV, Radio Ville-Marie, RTV Belge, Radio France, i24 News, Arutz 7, Radio Vesti Kiev).
